As showcased in this custom headboard design by Huma Sulaiman, the trend transitions the “woven air” muslin from traditional sari fashion to bespoke upholstery, creating a stunning visual lightness where intricate, hand-loomed motifs appear to float against the surface. This artisanal application not only adds an ethereal, tactile layer to the room but also transforms furniture into a piece of heritage storytelling, blending sustainable, centuries-old Bangladeshi craftsmanship with modern design sensibilities.
Huma Sulaiman is an aesthete whose design philosophy bridges the worldly and the intimate. Her journey is one of passion and precision, shaped by years of discovery and an innate ability to weave narratives through spaces. Thús Huma is a gathering of seemingly disparate worlds: geography, art & design, which Huma translates for contemporary audiences.
Mohammad Rubel (also known as Rubel Mia) is a master weaver from Narayanganj, celebrated for his pivotal role in the historic revival of the legendary Dhakai Muslin. Having learned the craft of weaving as a child over two decades ago, Rubel was selected by the Bangladesh Handloom Board as one of only two artisans capable of mastering the lost technique required to recreate the "woven air" fabric that once clothed Mughal royalty. While traditional Jamdani weavers typically work with thread counts around 100, Rubel undertook the arduous challenge of working with ultra-fine, microscopic threads, successfully weaving muslin with a thread count of 500 and higher—a feat previously thought impossible in the modern era. His dedication culminated in the creation of six authentic muslin saris, one of which followed a 1710 design and was presented to the Prime Minister, cementing his status as a key figure in restoring Bangladesh's textile heritage.
